Drum Spinning, No Heat — We Find the Cause and Fix It Same Day.

Your dryer runs through the full cycle, the drum turns, but the clothes come out just as damp as they went in. It’s a frustrating problem — and one of the more common dryer failures we see across Ottawa.

The drum turning without heat means the motor and belt are fine. The failure is in the heating system — and whether you have an electric dryer or a gas dryer, the cause and the fix are completely different. Yanfix technicians work on both, carry the most common heating parts on every truck, and get most Ottawa dryers running hot again the same day you call.

Electric Dryer vs. Gas Dryer: Why the Difference Matters

Before jumping into causes, it’s worth being clear on this: an electric dryer with no heat and a gas dryer with no heat are two separate diagnostic paths. The symptoms look identical from the outside — drum spins, no warmth — but the components involved are completely different.

💡  Not sure if you have a gas or electric dryer? Check behind the machine: a gas dryer has a flexible metal gas line connected to the wall. An electric dryer uses a large 240V outlet (4-prong or 3-prong) — bigger than a standard wall socket.

One thing is shared across both: a blown thermal fuse. It’s a single-use safety component that cuts off heat permanently when it trips — and it’s the first thing our technicians check regardless of dryer type.

Why Is My Dryer Not Producing Heat? Common Causes

Here’s a complete breakdown of every component that can cause a dryer to lose heat, organized by how often we find it on service calls in Ottawa:

Component

Applies To

What Fails

Heating element

Electric only

Metal coil burns through — no heat at all, drum still turns

Thermal fuse

Both

One-time safety fuse blows from overheating — kills heat permanently until replaced

Cycling thermostat

Both

Regulates temperature during drying — when it fails, heat cuts out early or never starts

High-limit thermostat

Both

Backup safety — trips if drum gets too hot, cuts heat as a precaution

Gas igniter

Gas only

Ignites the burner — when it weakens or breaks, gas won’t light

Gas valve coils (solenoids)

Gas only

Open the gas valve for each burn cycle — coils wear out and valve stays closed

Flame sensor (radiant sensor)

Gas only

Detects igniter heat before opening gas valve — faulty sensor shuts down burner

Timer / control board

Both

Electronic signal failure — heat cycle never triggers despite components working fine

Clogged exhaust vent

Both

Restricted airflow causes thermal fuse to blow and heat to shut off as a safety measure

Blown Thermal Fuse

This is the single most common cause of a dryer with no heat, across both electric and gas models. The thermal fuse is a small, inexpensive safety device mounted on the exhaust duct or near the heating element. It’s designed to blow once if the dryer overheats — after that, it stays open and cuts heat permanently until it’s replaced.

The catch: a blown thermal fuse is almost always a symptom, not the root cause. Something made the dryer overheat in the first place, usually a clogged exhaust vent or a failing cycling thermostat. Replace the fuse without fixing the underlying issue and it’ll blow again.

💡  If your dryer stopped heating suddenly after running fine for years, a blown thermal fuse is the most likely culprit — especially if the drum still turns normally.

Burned-Out Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

The heating element is a coil of resistance wire that generates heat when current passes through it. Over time — typically 8 to 12 years of regular use — the coil develops a break and stops conducting. Heat stops instantly and completely. You can sometimes hear the dryer running quietly without the usual low hum of the element, but the most reliable test is with a multimeter.

Faulty Gas Igniter (Gas Dryers)

In a gas dryer, a ceramic igniter glows orange-hot to light the burner. When the igniter weakens or cracks, it either won’t reach the temperature needed to open the gas valve, or it opens the valve briefly and then fails before the burner sustains a flame. The result: the drum heats up slightly for a minute, then runs cold for the rest of the cycle. This partial-heat pattern is a reliable indicator of an igniter problem.

Gas Valve Coil Failure (Gas Dryers)

The gas valve is controlled by a set of electromagnetic coils (solenoids). They open the valve to let gas flow to the burner during each heat cycle, then close it again. When the coils wear out — common in older gas dryers — the valve won’t open and the burner never fires. Unlike igniter failure, gas valve coil failure usually means no heat at all from the very first cycle, rather than intermittent heat.

Cycling Thermostat Failure

The cycling thermostat regulates drum temperature throughout the drying cycle, switching heat on and off to maintain a consistent temperature. When it fails in the open position, the heating circuit never closes and the element or burner never activates. When it fails in the closed position, the dryer overheats and the thermal fuse blows. Either way, heat stops.

Clogged Exhaust Vent

A partially blocked exhaust vent is technically not a component failure — but it’s responsible for a significant number of no-heat calls. Restricted airflow causes heat to back up in the drum, tripping the thermal fuse. The dryer then runs cold until the fuse is replaced and the vent is cleared. In Ottawa, this is particularly common in older homes where the dryer vents through a long duct run with multiple bends.

⚠️  A severely blocked dryer vent is a fire hazard. Lint is highly combustible, and a clogged vent can reach temperatures that ignite it. If your dryer runs hot but dries slowly, or if the exterior vent flap isn’t opening during operation, have the vent inspected immediately.

Control Board Failure

In newer electronic dryers, the control board manages heat cycle timing. A failed relay or burned trace on the board can prevent the heat signal from reaching the element or burner, even when every other component tests fine. Control board issues are less common but more expensive — we diagnose these last, after ruling out every mechanical cause.

Signs Your Dryer Has a Heating Problem

Clothes Are Still Damp After a Full Cycle

The clearest sign. The drum ran the full cycle, timer counted down, but nothing dried. The air inside the drum was moving but not warm. If this happens once, it might be a fluke overload. If it happens every cycle, the heating system has failed.

Drum Runs but You Feel No Warmth at the Vent

Put your hand near the exterior dryer vent while the machine is running. You should feel warm, slightly humid air. If the air is room temperature or cold, the heating system isn’t activating. This test takes 30 seconds and immediately confirms the problem.

Dryer Heats for a Few Minutes Then Goes Cold

Partial heat followed by cold air is a specific pattern. In gas dryers, it usually points to a weakening igniter — it lights the burner briefly, then fails before the burner can sustain. In both types, a cycling thermostat stuck in the wrong position can also cause intermittent heat.

Error Code on the Display

Modern dryers display error codes when the heating circuit fails. Common codes by brand:

Brand

No-Heat / Thermal Error Codes

Samsung

HE, HC, tS (heating circuit fault)

LG

tHE (thermistor error), HE (heater relay)

Whirlpool / Maytag

F3 E1, F3 E2 (thermistor / heater fault)

GE

E1, E3 (thermistor), E61 (heater fault)

Bosch

E51, E52 (NTC sensor / heating element)

Frigidaire

E64 (heating element), E68 (heating relay)

💡  Write down the error code before power-cycling the machine — some models clear codes on restart. The code tells our technician exactly which component to test first.

Dryer Takes Two or Three Cycles to Dry a Load

This often means the heating element or burner is working but underperforming — the dryer produces some heat but not enough. Common causes include a partially clogged vent (restricting airflow), a failing cycling thermostat, or a heating element with a partial break that still conducts some current.

What You Can Check Before Calling a Technician

A few quick checks that take under 10 minutes and might save you a service call:

Check the Lint Trap — and Clean It Thoroughly

A completely clogged lint screen restricts airflow enough to trip the thermal fuse. Remove the trap and hold it up to the light — you should see light through it. If not, wash it with warm soapy water, rinse, and let it dry before reinstalling.

Check the Exterior Vent Flap

Go outside and find where your dryer exhausts — usually a flap on an exterior wall or roof. Start the dryer and watch the flap: it should open clearly and you should feel warm air. If it doesn’t open, or barely opens, the duct is blocked. This is something you can investigate with a vacuum and a dryer vent cleaning brush before calling us.

Check for a Tripped Breaker (Electric Dryers)

Electric dryers run on a 240V double-pole circuit breaker. A partial trip — where one of the two breaker legs trips — can cut power to the heating element while leaving the motor running. The drum spins but produces no heat. Check your panel for a partially tripped breaker and reset it fully (off, then on) before assuming a component failure.

Check the Gas Supply (Gas Dryers)

Make sure the gas shutoff valve behind the dryer is fully open (handle parallel to the gas line). Also check that other gas appliances in the home are working — if nothing gas-powered is working, the issue is with your gas supply, not the dryer.
